The portal is a real option, not a first move. Five questions to ask out loud before the decision becomes permanent.
Entering the transfer portal is a decision your athlete can't fully take back. The scholarship may not hold. The relationships at the current school will shift. The clock on eligibility keeps running.
Five questions to sit with first.
One: what is the actual reason — fit, depth chart, coaching change, academics, home? Be specific. "I'm not playing" is a feeling; "I'm third on the depth chart and the room added two freshmen" is a fact.
Two: has the conversation with the current coach already happened? Real one, not a hallway nod.
Three: what does the next program need at the position right now — and is that an honest match?
Four: how do the academic credits transfer? A lost semester is a lost year of eligibility, quietly.
Five: what does the family say when the dust settles in three months and it didn't work? If you can live with that answer, the portal is a tool. If you can't, it's a reaction.
